The Pieta, oil on linen, unsigned, a high chiaroscuro rendering depicting Mary holding the body of Christ in her lap with a sword piercing her breast (Mater Dolorosa), the crown of thorns at her feet, angels descending; housed in an early reverse mitered hand carved gilt Florentine frame, OS: 29" x 23 1/2", SS: 17 1/2" x 11 1/2". Relined, fine craquelure. Provenance: From the estate of Hugo & Nathalie Weisgall, Rockport, Maine.
