Dogon Kanaga Mask in carved and painted wood, with fibre and cowrie shells, late 19th to early 20th c. Kanaga masks are worn at rituals called dama, held to transport the souls of deceased family members away from the village and to enhance the prestige of the deceased and his descendants by richly costumed and masked performances. 37" tall.
