Rare Square Shaped "Kuduo" or Sacred Box, for storage of soul essences. Usually drum shaped, these were made using the lost wax method of bronze casting, by the Ashanti of Central Ghana, this dates to the late 19th c. The tribe provided most of the gold used in Europe since the Middle Ages; this may actually have held gold. In square footed form with tight fitting lift-off lid, having plaquettes of mud fishes and human masks on the side, the top featuring an antelope surrounded by four leopards. 7" x 7 1/2" x 7". Very good condition.
