Mervyn Kurlansky; Jon Naar; Norman Mailer
Watching My Name Go By
London: Mathews Millar Dunbar, 1974.
First Edition.
34.5cm x 26.5cm. [88] pages, colour illustrations. Pictorial wrappers.
Documented by Kurlansky and Naar. Text by Mailer. "The Idea for this book was first conceived by graphic designer Mervyn Kurlansky, partner in the design consultancy, Pentagram, on a brief visit to New York in September 1972. He was so impressed by the recent outbreak of graffiti on subway cars, busses, trucks and buildings that he decided to return to New York specifically to record this phenomenon. He invited photographer Jon Naar to join him and together they explored New York, talking to those responsible and photographing theirwork. Norman Mailer was approached to contribute a text and this book is a result of their combined efforts." (from the introduction). A pioneering photobook on urban graffiti. Notably, the names of all the graffiti artists are recorded on the endpapers.
