A set of eight large photograph albums containing ca. 200 photographs collected by Brisbane businessman and former Mayor of Brisbane Robert Woods Thurlow (1855-1913) during his around the world trip in 1898. The albums are titled in gilt on the upper boards: Views of a Trip Round the World, 1898. Collected by R. W. Thurlow. Numbered 1-8 in gilt at the foot of the spines. Almost all photographs are captioned in the image. The albums are bound in half leather with cloth boards. Binding by Sapsford & Co. of Brisbane with their ticket at the back of each album. The photographs would have been taken in the 1880s and 1890s.
The albums cover:
Vol. 1 (27 photographs): Dehiwala in Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka), including people, fishing villages, towns, and elephants. Aden in Yemen, including the Hotel de l'Europe, views of the town, a dam, and camels.
Vol. 2 (22 photographs): Egypt, including photographs of the Nile, a mummy, the pyramids and the Sphinx, interior of a mosque, a Bazaar, Turkish women, buildings, a derwish, a family of black Africans.
Vol. 3 (29 photographs): Naples and Pompeii with photographs of ruins and artefacts.
Vol. 4 (24 photographs): Port Said, including photographs of buildings, the Canal, a large 'tribal' family and Bedouins, followed by six large photographs of women described as Armenian, Greek and Turkish.
Vol. 5 (28 photographs): Naples, Pompeii, Milan with city ad harbour views, ruins, but also pasta making.
Vol. 6 (17 photographs): Belgium including buildings and works of art.
Vol. 7 (20 photographs): Belgium and Italy, incl. buildings and works of art, but also women with dogs pulling carts and the pyramid at Waterloo.
Vol. 8 (34 photographs): a few from the USA, Pacific Islanders (3), but mostly England and Scotland, incl. the Forth Bridge.
Offered together with: A pair of binoculars engraved 'Presented to R. W. Thurlow Esq. with the best wishes of his employees. On the eve of his departure for departure for England, April 5th 1898'.
Boards with insect damage, but bindings tight and only some minimal rubbing to leather. Some photographs somewhat faded, but very good tonality overall. Good Condition.
