The monumental work on New Zealand by geologist Ferdinand von Hochsttetter. Hochstetter (1829-1884) was geologist on the Austrian 'Novara' voyage. When the Novara reached Auckland in December 1858, Hochstetter undertook geological surveys at the request of the government. He was to remain in New Zealand for 9 months and on his return to Austria spent the next 10 years working on the collections made during the Novara voyage, including the official geologiy report. His 'Neu-Seeland' is the first major work on New Zealand in the German language. The delightful coloured steel engravings were done after original watercolous by New Zealand explorer and artist Charles Heaohy (1820 - 1881, Brisbane). An English translation was published in 1867, omitting some of the chapters of this original German edition.
