My life as a sculptor began during an extended stay in Buenos Aires, where I was introduced to the seductive powers of creating in clay. Thoroughly bewitched, I gave up my career as a lawyer and began devoting my energies to creating sculpture. I currently spend many of my waking hours in the basement of The Art Students League, focused on the creative possibilities of ceramics.
Grounded in the study of the human body and anatomy that is central to the classical sculptural tradition, my work conveys a more contemporary sensibility. Some pieces present the figure realistically, while in others I depart from rigorous anatomy to portray protean figures, geometric and amorphous, with realistic human heads. These pieces explore the myriad topological possibilities of form and seek to break down the corporeality imposed by nature. I strive to meld inherent form, as expressed through structure, with the more particularized individual stance, as portrayed by expression and position, enhanced by the aesthetic choice of color and glazes. The allusions to the traditional form along with gestures of the imagination are intended to provoke responses ranging from the earnest to the whimsical, depending on the viewer's own perspective and inclination.
My work has been included in group shows in New York City, and I am a recipient of the Ruth Katzman Merit Scholarship from The Art Students League of New York.
