About the artist - Sharon Sprung:
Sharon Sprung is an Art Students League alumnus and current instructor, who recently had the honor of being selected to paint the White House official portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama. Sprung, who describes her process as one of “carefully observed negotiation,” has long made art “as equivalent as possible to the complexity of real life.” In her striking portrait, Sprung captures Obama’s lauded tenure as First Lady of the United States, and her enduring status as a symbol of American excellence, elegance, and empathy. Sprung’s previous commissions have included other historically significant women, including Patsy Mink, the first woman of color elected to Congress, and Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to hold federal office in the United States. Beyond her work in portraiture, Sprung is an accomplished painter of the “untamable expression of the human condition,” whose work has won numerous awards.
