Catherine Birchard was born, lives and works in New York. Her work includes painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, hand bookbinding and book restoration.
Catherine has a B.A. in the History of Art from Cornell University. She has been affiliated with The Art Students League of New York in New York, NY, The Center for Book Arts in New York, NY, The Organization of Independent Artists in New York, NY, BBFL in Brooklyn, NY, ArtsWestchester in White Plains, NY, The Mamaroneck Artists’ Guild in Larchmont, NY, The Center for the Arts/Westchester Art Workshop/WCC in White Plains, NY, The Herbert F. Johnson Museum in Ithaca, NY, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY. Her art has been selected for numerous juried shows in the NYC area, including exhibitions at Castle Gallery (Westchester Biennial) in New Rochelle, NY, Katonah Museum in Katonah, NY, Erector Square Gallery in New Haven, CT, Silvermine Galleries in New Canaan, CT, Westbeth Gallery in New York, NY, Phoenix Gallery in New York, NY, BBFL Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and Boccara Art Brooklyn in Brooklyn, NY.
Catherine’s artistic focus is abstraction, as well as the human form. Using color, form and line, she explores an ever-evolving language of abstraction. Her creative dialogue or visual conversation builds and expands through a process of statement and response, action and reaction with rich and textured, loose and free, linear and sweeping marks. Brushstrokes and lines energize and intersect the space, orchestrating a painterly rhythm and flow of expression. Catherine works instinctively, using observation, knowledge and experimentation, reacting to the last mark made. By combining drawing and painting, she can best capture her creative impulse.
