Additional Information: This five color lithograph on Dieu Donne hand made paper with deckled edges is pencil signed, dated and numbered from the limited edition of 84. This 1980s Robert Kushner print was created as part of the 1987 portfolio "The Ten Commandments", in which ten top Jewish American artists were each invited to choose an Old Testament commandment to interpret in contemporary lithographic form. The "Chosen" artists were, in order of Commandment: Kenny Scharf, Joseph Nechvatal, Gretchen Bender, April Gornik, Robert Kushner, Nancy Spero, Vito Acconci, Jane Dickson, Judy Rifka and Richard Bosman. This is the first time the print will have been removed from the original portfolio case. (shown). Lisa Liebmann, who wrote the introduction to the collection, observed: "...The image has, for most of us, replaced the word..." With respect to the present work, she writes, "There is a sweet smell of nostalgia to Robert Kushner's view of the FIFTH COMMANDMENT, to honor one's parents. Kushner's subtly ornate use of colors suffuses his subject with a filagreed texture of warmth. In this gentle icon, the traditional duo - all those Ozzies and Harriets in our hearts and on the airwaves -are frames as if by a bubble bath of affection."
Artist Biography: Robert Kushner participated in the early development of the Pattern and Decoration Movement in the 1970s, and is known for championing a decorative style of painting. “I never get tired of pursuing new ideas in the realm of ornamentation,” he said. “Decoration, an abjectly pejorative dismissal for many, is a very big, somewhat defiant declaration for me.” Artisanal objects the artist discovered in his travels abroad—particularly Japanese screen doors, Islamic patterns, and Uzbekistani embroideries—strongly affected the development of his organic plant forms, grid-based compositions, and use of bold colors and gold leaf. He was also strongly influenced by Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gustav Klimt, and the French Nabis painters. Since the 1980s, flowers and leaves have become Kushner’s signature motif.

The Charity will arrange the shipping of the purchased lots with the buyer directly unless otherwise agreed. The buyer is responsible for the cost of shipping and all associated fees. Bidsquare and the Charity are not responsible for any acts which result in damages by carriers or packers of purchased lots, whether or not recommended by the Seller or Bidsquare, and will not be liable for any losses which result. The Charity will provide a reasonable amount of assistance to buyers in arranging shipping and insurance, but the buyer is responsible for claims of loss or damage and for contacting the insurer or carriers directly.
Once good payment has been received, the Charity will release the item and coordinate as soon as is reasonably possible but not later than 30 days after payment has been received, with the buyer for the transportation of the object.Purchased lots will be shipped from the Charity’s office in New York City. Buyers may contact the Charity if they wish to arrange to pick up the purchased lot(s) personally.
