Artwork Description: "Joni Mitchell Paper Doll" is Kelly's 2-dimensional interpretation of his performance work "Paved Paradise", in which he portrayed Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. This graphic work was created within the tradition of the Paper Doll, which appeared in 18th century Paris during the reign of Louis XV, though several sources assert their existance in 9th century Japan. As products of both popular culture and mass marketing, paper dolls were originally designed to reflect society's idealized version of womanhood.
Artist Biography: John Kelley is an award winning performance and visual artist. This November he will be a Baryshnikov Arts Fellowship at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, Tivoli, NY where he will begin working on a new solo performance work. He recently completed his first graphic novel "A Friend Gave Me A Book".
