Artwork Description: Suono, Italian for sound, is an adaptation of the entry for Sound: SHU-SUB in my 2006 encyclopedia series A-ZYM, which was inspired by a 1910 Britannica Encyclopedia Contro discovered in a cottage she rented on Cape Cod for an artist retreat. Suono alludes to the movement and vibrations that create sound waves and, ultimately, produce sound. The diagrammatic representation of sound in Suono also evokes the marks and sketches that a choreographer employs to describe movement in dance.
Artist Biography: Contro's art ranges from drawing, painting, multimedia installations, and concept-based collaborations that engage a variety of artists and practitioners. Thus, the Night, a collaborative film with Spektral Quartet, recently premiered publicly with Aspen Film. Exhibitions include American Philosophical Society Museum, Chicago Cultural Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Newberry Library. Collections include Art Institute of Chicago, Hammer Museum, Harvard Art Museums, Menil Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, and other private and institutional collections.
