Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721) was already known as the King's (Charles II) carver by 1680. He was born, raised and educated in Holland to English parents. It is presumed that his father worked for Inigo Jones, but little is known about his training. Grinling did exceptional work in St. Pauls Cathedral, Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and created beautiful life-like carved trophies for Petworth House and Hampton Court. He is traditionally known for his carved garlands, baroque picture frames and exquisite still-life panels. Horace Warpole famously wrote about Gibbons, "There is no instance of a man before Gibbons who gave wood the loose and airy lightness of flowers, and chained together the various productions of the elements with the free disorder natural to each species".
Fitted with a new mirror plate. Numerous areas of loss, re-carving and restorations throughout. Lacking grape cluster lower left corner and center of top crest. The carved owl at the top is lacking part of his beak and his legs. Missing bits and pieces throughout.
