- Lot Description
Fitted on a flat black painted base.
43 x 4 ft. 5 1/5 x 16 in. (overall).
Note: The Gay Head was a whaling bark and many of them set sail in the 19th Century in search of whales on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This sailing vessel is fitted with three masts, square-rigged on the fore and main masts and fore and aft rigged on the mizzenmast. This rig became very popular in the mid 19th century as it required fewer crew to handle the sails when the boats were down for whales, thus saving the owners money. The earliest Gay Head bark is recorded departing New Bedford on August 29, 1877.
Age splits on the front, back and interior. The painted surface on the masts have crazing and minor losses. One detached piece is on the deck. Each life boat has two spears, wear is consistent with age and use. The base is drilled for shipping and is slightly worn. Appears to be in generally good condition.Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.Condition
