- Lot Description
Acrylic on canvas, 2007, signed 'Gonzalez' and dated on the reverse, with label from Paula Cooper Gallery, NY.
24 x 30 in., 25 1/2 x 31 1/4 in. (frame).
Note: New Orleans-born artist Wayne Gonzales uses painting to explore the relationships between history, photography and memory. Gonzalez grew up on the same street as Lee Harvey Oswald and had ties to the JFK murder investigation. Using photographic source material from this event, Gonzalez produced a series of photo-derived paintings in 2001 that explored each piece of "evidence" in the murder case. He continued to use 'series' as a way to explore politics, social activity and human nature. For his series of works from 2007-2008 called Waiting Crowd, Gonzalez used photographs found on the internet of crowds at the beach, sporting events and air shows to show the malleability of photography and its ability to alter the truthful documentation of an event.
