Note: This chair was designed by Gillows in the 1870's for Sir Ramsden's Country House. Sir John Ramsden (1831-1914) purchased the Ardverikie and Benalder forests in 1871 for £107,500 (equivalent to £10,648,824 in 2021). In 1873, the house was destroyed by fire, and was rebuilt from 1874 to 1878. It was rebuilt in the popular style of Scottish baronial architecture, designed by the architect John Rhind.
Sir John William Ramsden, 5th Baronet was a British Liberal party politician. He was a member of Parliament from 1873 to 1886. In 1865 he married Lady Helen Guendolen Seymour, daughter of the 12th Duke of Somerset, thus acquiring the Bulstrode estate at Gerrards Cross.
