Note: DeWitt Clinton was born into a political dynasty and would devote most of his life to serving New York. He began his career as secretary to his uncle and Governor of New York George Clinton. In 1798, he was elected to the State Legislature then served as a senator. Clinton then served three terms as mayor of New York City and eventually won the election for the Lieutenant Governor. After losing the Presidential election to James Madison in 1812 he would serve as the Governor of New York and eventually die in office in 1828. Among the highlights of his career was the development of the Erie Canal which would revolutionize transportation and commerce benefiting the economy of New York State.
The Stobwasser Company of Brunswick, Germany was founded in 1763 and was known for its finely painted snuff boxes featuring portraits of historical figures and events. Each box was signed and numbered in gold script. This box depicts DeWitt Clinton as the 1812 Federalist candidate for President.
