- Lot Description
Brown ink and wash on laid paper, unsigned, with the collector's stamp of William Mayor (Lugt 2799) lower right. 7 3/8 x 11 3/4 in. (sheet), 15 1/4 x 19 1/4 in. (frame).Exhibited: Stadel Museum, Drawings by Old Masters, Frankfort, 1924, illus. no. 48.Note: This drawing was catalogued as 'Rembrandt School' in the Robert von Hirsch sale. It has also been suggested that it is by Anthony von Borssum. Werner Sumowski has ascribed the work to Rembrandt's late pupil Aert de Gelder (see Sumowski's Drawings of the Rembrandt School, vol. 5, NY, 1981, p. 2428).Provenance: William Mayor, London; Alexander Koch, Darmstadt; sold Sotheby's, Robert von Hirsch sale, London, June 20, 1978, Lot 49.
