Oil on canvas, signed 'Bak' lower left.
19 3/4 x 19 3/4 in., 21 1/2 x 21 1/2 in. (frame).
Note: Born in Poland in 1933, Samuel Bak's family lived in the ghetto of Vilna under the German occupation. He and his mother were the only family members to survive the holocaust, fleeing to the Landsberg Displaced Persons Camp where he would have his first painting lessons. In 1956, after immigrating to the newly established state of Israel in 1948, Bak moved to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Throughout his career Bak has explored metaphorical questions about destruction, memory and the human spirit. In 2017, the city of Vilna opened The Samuel Bak Museum to honor his art and his commitment to the education of future generations.
