Note: The subject here is Elizabeth Turbutt (1708-1800), daughter of Foster and Bridgett Turbutt of Talbot County, Maryland. She married Tench Francis of Philadelphia in 1724. The companion portrait of Tench Francis is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Feke painted the couple twice. In the Sotheby's sale referenced in provenance, they noted a label on the back of the stretcher as from Philadelphia Museum of Art, Portrait of Mrs. Tench Francis, 11-1969-2. Lender: Mr. E. Shippen Willing, Jr. Edward Shippen Willing Jr. inherited the portrait from his father who inherited by decent through the Tench's daughter, Margaret Tench Francis who married Edward Shippen.
