- Lot Description
38 x 28 1/2 x 23 1/4 in; height of seat 18 1/2 in.
Note: An identical suite of Chinese Chippendale seat furniture was made for William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme (1851-1925) in the late 19th century for Thornton Manor. The suite comprised of one settee, eight armchairs and four side chairs which were transferred to the Music Room at The Hill (Leverhulme's house in Hamstead, London). A set of four Lord Leverhulme armchairs sold Sotheby's, London, May 28, 2009, Lot 94. There are a set of four armchairs and a settee in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, London, see P. Macquoid, English Furniture...in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, London, 1928, nos. 157, 158, pl. 48. Four armchairs also in the Lady Lever Art Gallery were thought by Macquoid to be from the same set (ibid, no. 157, pl. 47), but are now considered to be later in date.
Age splits to the fretwork backrests and side panels as to be expected, some a loose. The apron fretwork is loose on one chair. Nicks on the legs with slightly soiled upholstery.
