Bronze with green patina, with the artist's copyright and incised signature lower right, on a black marble base with a plaque from the ICD/Freedom of the Human Spirit Award.
24 3/4 x 14 x 10 in. (without base).
Note: Marshall Frederick's massive bronze sculpture Freedom of the Human Spirit was made for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. A second casting was made in 1986 and installed in Birmingham, Michigan. Under the direction of Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, the New York World's Fair Committee on Sculpture chose Fredericks from a shortlist of distinguished American sculptors including Paul Manship, Theodore Rozsak, Jose de Rivera, and Donald De Lue. In 1996, during the construction of the US Tennis Center in Queens, the sculpture was moved to a new site near the Unisphere where it was restored to its original patina with the artist's consultation. A small-scale casting of the sculpture, as here, serves as the annual Freedom of the Human Spirit Award given by the International Center for the Disabled, an organization that Fredericks supported.
