STAIR is proud to offer works from the Collection of James Grafstein. Mr. Grafstein was a well-respected dealer and a friend to many in the antiques community. Trained in France at the Museé du Louvre his knowledge of the 18th French Decorative arts was renowned. He was specifically recognized for his discerning eye for French Furniture and Porcelain. He later paid homage to the Louvre with several important donations to their collection and was granted France’s highest civilian award for his generosity. - Lot Description
Fitted with a marble top of break-front outline. Jean Caumont, maitre in 1774.
33 x 44 x 20 3/4 in.
Note: Jean Caumont was based in the rue Traversière. His documented oeuvre is considerable and eclectic, mainly executed in the Transition and full-blown Louis XVI style, and embellished with marquetry scenes of musical trophies and flower-vases or with carefully chosen mahogany veneers with constrasting ormolu mounts. The Comte de Salverte describes this ébéniste extensively and mentions a Louis XVI giltwood console table stamped by Caumont in the Mobilier National and a secretaire à abattant in the collection of Mme Demachy at the Château d'Ognon. (Comte de Salverte, Les Ébénistes du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1953, p.52)
Caumont played an active role in the revolution and was elected juge de paix. He handed the leadership of his atelier over to his son in 1795 and was thereafter mainly engaged in politics. (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p.169).Condition
Generally, in good condition. The marble top with minor nicks and scuffing. Minor veneer losses and replacements with evidence of old worming. The side panels with slight warping. Nicely inlaid and good scale. Structurally sound.
