- Lot Description
6 ft. 8 in. x 11 ft. 2 in. x 1 in. (overall).
Note: Jonathan D. Poor (1807-1845) was an American landscape muralist working in New England in the 19th century. He trained with his famous uncle and mentor Rufus Porter (1792-1884). Mr. Porter left his mark on American history as an itinerant artist, muralist, inventor, teacher and founder of Scientific American magazine, among others. Approximately 115 to 120 murals have been attributed to or associated with Porter, there are only three actually documented with his signature. In contrast, only thirty-four to forty murals have been attributed to Jonathan Poor, his signature appears in ten murals in Maine and Massachusetts. Jonathan Poor was born in Baldwin Maine in 1807. It is suggested that he began traveling and working with his uncle as early as 1823.
The above offered lot was removed from the dining room of The Silas Burbank House, Mt. Vernon, Maine in 1984 and has been conserved with rice paper on the front. Another mural by Jonathan Poor also from the dining room of The Silas Burbank House (and removed at the same time), is signed and dated 1839 and now conserved and installed in the Van Gorden-Williams Library and Archives at the National Heritage Museum in Lexington, Mass.
