- Lot Description
Oil on canvas, titled and dated 'July 11 18..' lower right, with the Mc Entee Sale inkstamp, titled and inscribed '132' on the reverse.
11 1/2 x 16 in., 15 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. (frame).
Exhibited: Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY, Window on the West: Views From the American Frontier, June 28- September 21, 2003 (then travelled until 2004).
Note: Kingston, NY native Jervis McEntee studied with fellow Hudson River painter Frederick Church. In 1881, McEntee traveled to Fort Halleck, Nevada to visit his sister, painting several views of the area, of which this is one. Fort Halleck was established in 1867 to protect the recent settlers in the area as well as the route of the Central Pacific Railway. The fort was named for Major General Henry W. Halleck. It was abandoned in 1886.
Canvas appears to have been cut down and reattached to the stretcher, a nail through the date lower right. Rubbing around the extreme edges under the frame with attendant small areas of gilding. Tiny losses at the corners under the frame. Surface soiling. Otherwise in good condition.Condition
