- Lot Description
Oil on panel, unsigned, indistinctly inscribed with a number lower left.
10 3/4 x 14 1/4 in., 13 3/4 x 17 1/2 in. (frame).
Note: The story of the Biblical figure of Hagar (or Agar) is found in the Old Testament. Purchased as a slave in Egypt, Hagar was the maid to Abraham's wife, Sarah, who was childless. Sarah gave Hagar to her husband as a concubine to bear him an heir, his son Ishmael. When Hagar became pregnant, her personality changed from meek to arrogant causing her to receive very bad treatment from Sarah. She fled into the wilderness where she was found by an angel who told her to return home to give birth to her son. Many years after the birth of Ishmael, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to Isaac. Fearing that Ishmael would be considered an heir alongside her own child by Abraham, Sarah banished Hagar and Ishmael to the desert. The scene in this painting depicts the meeting of Hagar and the Angel.
