- Lot Description
Charcoal, pencil and ink on paper, c. 1924, signed 'Geo Bellows J.B.B.' by the artist's daughter, Jean Bellows Booth, lower right, with label from Spanierman Gallery, NY.
16 1/2 x 20 1/4 in. (sheet), 25 1/4 x 26 1/2 in. (frame).
Note: This study for Two Women shows Bellows' systematic approach to composition. The contoured figures are carefully arranged in an underlying structure of intersecting lines and diagonals. Along with several other members of the Ashcan School, Bellows was intrigued by the color theories of H.G. Maratta. Maratta devised a system that assigned each color to a corresponding musical note, creating a balance between colors. The inspiration for the subject of Two Women was Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, here adapted to a modern-day living room where the figures of 'profane love' and 'sacred love' are wearing contemporary dress. Bellows' painting, completed in 1924, is in the collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR. It was acquired by the museum in 2014. The painting was owned by members of the artist's family from the time of Bellows' death in 1925 until 1967 when it was bought at auction by a private collector.
Condition
Two small tears and creases at the bottom sheet edge. Some creasing and surface soiling. Otherwise in very good condition.
