Fitted with a green breccia or green porphyry socle on a black marble base.
13 x 7 3/4 x 5 in.
Kollenburg Note: This bust of a faun is made after a sculpture by Clodion that we only know from a draft of the master himself. The sketch in red crayon was published in 1885 in the first monograph of the French sculptor Claude Michel Clodion.
This Satyr (or Faun in Latin) is a mythical rural deity. It's a cheerful and naughty forest creature from the entourage of Dionysos (or Bacchus in Latin). Satyrs are characterized by the goats' horns and tail, furry skin and goatee. The Satyr symbolizes lust and exaltation.
The French sculptor Claude Michel Clodion (1738-1814) is particularly famous for his terracotta figures. From an early stage on his work was copied in bronze. The bust of a Faun is a fabulous example that, in remarkable quality and great detail, shows the hand of a master.
Literature: H. Thirion, Les Adam and Clodion, Paris, 1885.
