The rectangular calendar with the heading A Perpetual Regulation of Time dated from the year 1753 to 1852, with various adjustable tables within an architectural frame with three brass finials, flanked by an angled barometric tube with signed silvered register plate and sliding recorder above a reed hygrometer, and a thermometer, both with reeded bulb covers. 41 x 26 1/4 in.
Sotheby's Note: Francis Watkins, located first at Sir Isaac Newton's Head, 415 Charing Cross and from 1747-84 at 5 Charing Cross, is best known for his angle barometers, set in a frame with a thermometer and a gear-operated printed calendar entitled "Perpetual Regulation of Time." This calendar shows the time of high water at London Bridge, the times of sunrise and sunset, the length of the day, the days of the month, and the zodiacal signs, as well as the dates of Easter from 1753 to 1852, the movable feasts and the dates of the kings of England.
Watkins' former apprentice, Addison Smith, became his partner in 1763 but the partnership was dissolved by 1775.
For a discussion of Watkins' career, see Nicholas Goodison, English Barometers 1680-1860, Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club, 1977, pp. 269-74. Cf. a similar barometer Watkins and Smith, ibid., p. 278, fig. 190, the finials, however, mounted at the ends of the pediment; for a very similar barometer, see also, Christie's, London, July 7, 1988, lot 47, illus.; another, Partridge Fine Arts PLC Summer Exhibition catalogue, 1990, no. 5, pp. 16-7, with a slightly different silvered register.
In good condition considering its age. Scattered small nicks and age splits. With four bone winding knobs.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
Sold Sotheby's, New York, October 23, 1998, Lot 338.
