The panel is carved in low relief, flush with the surface, now mounted on a fabric panel. It retains gesso and paint in some areas. 9 3/8 x 40 1/4 in., 12 x 43 1/4 in. overall. Note: According to E.D. Maquire, the panel probably formed part of a decorative case for a ceiling beam in a private house or secular building, or possibly a funeral chapel. Literature: E.D. Macquire, Weavings from Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Egypt, The Rich Life and the Dance, University of Illinois, 1999, pg. 42-43, no. A2.
