Literature: A virtually identical console table is illustrated in Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, 1991, pg. 261, plate 144. He states, 'Pier table in the Empire/Victorian style, ornately carved rosewood with marble inset top, circa 1840s. Brought to America by Captain Robert Forbes in 1849, the table might have been made for use in his residence in China before that date'. It is currently in The Collection of the Robert Bennet Forbes House, Milton, Massachusetts. Captain Robert Bennet Forbes (1804-1889) and his brother John Murray Forbes (1813-1898) were both actively involved in the China trade. The brothers built the house in Milton, MA which now houses a fine collection from their travels, predominately Chinese decorative and fine arts from the 19th century which they purchased in Canton.
