Note: In the late-18th century, advances in technology and transportation allowed people to see the world in entirely new ways. In June of 1783, the Montgolfier brothers launched the first hot air balloon over the town of Annonay in France. Not only did the hot air balloon give artists and geographers a new vantage point from which to understand the lay of the land, the machine itself inspired sartorial and decorative styles like the ballooning Lunardi hat.
