Image Dimensions: 335 x 488 mm | 13 3/16 x 19 7/32 inchMaxim Dondyuk (b.1983) is a Ukrainian visual artist working in the field of documentary photography. His practice integrates multiple mediums including photography, video, text, and archival material. Maxim’s works often explore issues relating to history, memory, conflict, and their consequences.
UMAN ROSH HASHANA (2008 - 2011, 2017)
Uman is an ordinary Ukrainian town with a population of about 90.000 people, became one of the biggest centers of Jewish pilgrimage outside Israel.
About 40.000 Hasidic pilgrims from all the continents come here annually to celebrate the Jewish New Year - The Rosh Hashana, and to pray at the grave of the founder of Hasidism Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, who died in Uman in 1810.
Before his death, Rebbe Nachman swears an unusual oath: “If anyone comes to my grave, sacrifices a coin and reads ten chosen psalms, I’ll catch his side-locks and will draw him out of the hell’s depth. And it makes no difference what he has done before.”
Every year more and more supporters of Breslov Hasidism gather in Uman at the grave of their Rebbe. The charism of Rebbe Nachman was so strong, that Hasidic have never chosen his successor as it had been usual in other Hasidic dynasties. Other Hasidic ironically call Breslov Hasidic “dead Hasidic”.
