Elena Subach (b.1980) is a Ukrainian visual artist and photographer. Born in Chervonohrad, Ukraine. Currently based in Lviv, Ukraine.
Elena studied economics and received her master`s degree in Volyn State University in Ukraine before she turned to photography. In an auto-didactic way, she developed her own unique vision on Ukrainian visual culture.
In her artistic practice, Elena is concerned with questioning religion, tradition, the construction of history and the consequences of soviet colonial pasts. Since 2018, Elena has developed these ideas in her project on Grandmothers on the Edge of Heaven, for which she is researching and photographing crowded religious celebrations and ceremonies in Ukraine. The urge to show this rich Ukrainian heritage through an artistic eye is present in everything she captures and the inspiration she gets from her motherland is endless.
GRANDMOTHERS ON THE EDGE OF HEAVEN
Festive Table is a work from my Grandmothers on the Edge of Heaven series. ‘Grandmothers on the Edge of Heaven’ was created during peacetime and is dedicated to my grandmother.
For the Grandmother's project, collage was chosen intuitively as a technique and had a therapeutic effect for me. I cut women's figures or items that are related to my grandmother and moved them into imaginary paradise landscapes. I repeated this action and it helped me survive my own farewell pain with a loved one.
Earlier, before the threat of military invasion of Ukraine, my project was just a lyrical dedication to the older generation, and a reminder to support closely related people. These days, the project represents another opportunity to show the world my country and our people, namely their beauty, uniqueness, and fragility. Now, we all need each other's support. A compelling need to care for something truly important, protecting it is one of the most powerful feelings that motivates Ukrainians today.
