Dima Tolkachov | Born in 1989 in Mala Vyska, Ukraine. Dima is a Ukrainian visual artist based in Kyiv. He works with photography and experiments with digital graphic techniques. His practice explores patterns of human behavior in public spaces, interactions of human-made objects with environments, vernacular creativity, and the feeling of uncertainty in the modern world. Since russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Dima has primarily been reflecting upon how the atrocities of war are mediated. He’s searching for visual metaphors that can give insight into how the material consequences of the war affect his and Ukrainian society’s perception of reality. His work was exhibited in Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, and published in EEP Berlin Vol. 1, FT Weekend, HOPE, and Solomiya magazines.
Description: I took this image on August 24, 2021, when Ukraine celebrated its 30th birthday. The An-225 Mriya - The Dream - flight over the military parade was the cherry on the celebration cake. The An-225 used to be the largest cargo aircraft in the world. It was developed at the end of the Cold War to carry "the Soviet shuttle" - the Buran reusable spacecraft. When the USSR collapsed, the An-225 became the property of Ukraine. Nobody launched Burans anymore, so Mriya started doing commercial flights. In 2009, the aircraft was entered into the Guinness Book of Records, sealing the status of the An-225 as a symbol of national pride.
Mriya flies over the pedestal of the Lenin monument, demolished in 2013 during the Maidan Revolution. It marked the beginning of "Leninopad" - erasing Soviet emblems from the Ukrainian symbolic landscape. The pedestal in and of itself has turned into a symbol of the revolution. It also became a platform for art installations until someone installed a DIY trident - Ukraine's national emblem - there. No one exactly knows what a trident means. But during the heyday of Kyiv Rus, it was the coat of arms of the Rurik dynasty - a symbol of feudal power. It took almost a millennium for the trident to transform into a symbol of Ukrainian democracy.
The way how contradictory ideologies in the form of symbolic messages have overlapped in this snap of reality still astonishes me. The plane, planned to carry a symbol of the Soviet space program, became a national emblem of an independent Ukraine. The pedestal for a Soviet power marker turned into an image of pulling away from Soviet symbolism. Now it bears a republican coat of arms, which used to be a sign of feudal rule a thousand years ago.
In 2022, the AN-225 Mriya was destroyed in the Battle of Antonov Airport in Gostomel during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, adding an extra layer of symbolic reading to the image.
