Dima Tolkachov | Born in 1989 in Mala Vyska, Ukraine. Dima is a Ukrainian visual artist based in Kyiv. He works with photography and experiments with digital graphic techniques. His practice explores patterns of human behavior in public spaces, interactions of human-made objects with environments, vernacular creativity, and the feeling of uncertainty in the modern world. Since russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Dima has primarily been reflecting upon how the atrocities of war are mediated. He’s searching for visual metaphors that can give insight into how the material consequences of the war affect his and Ukrainian society’s perception of reality. His work was exhibited in Ukraine, Poland, and Germany, and published in EEP Berlin Vol. 1, FT Weekend, HOPE, and Solomiya magazines.
Description: The Motherland Monument was opened in 1981 and has become a symbol of Kyiv ever since. It depicts a female warrior holding a sword and a shield notoriously emblazoned with the hammer and sickle. The Maidan Revolution triggered a public discussion concerning the de-communization of Soviet monuments. According to the debate, the Soviet Union emblem on Motherland’s shield should have been removed and replaced with the Ukrainian trident.
I took this image of the statue in the autumn of 2015 during the intense phase of the decommunization debate. The fog concealed the hammer and sickle, smoothing out the figure into an iconic silhouette that every Ukrainian could guess. After the Russian invasion in 2022, the Motherland has become an image of Ukrainian resistance. Although the Soviet emblem has yet to be removed, the monument is already portrayed with a trident on the shield in Ukrainian popular culture.
