Description: This image is part of the series Portrait of a Village, a project documenting the Ukrainian village my family were taken from when it was invaded by the nazis in 1942. I was the first of my family to ever go back.
Tsybulivka is a remote village in the Odesa Oblast region of Ukraine. It was built by my ancestors, a group of Black Sea Germans. Life was tough, the small village witnessed great horrors and historical upheavals: epidemics, famines, communism, invasions, murders, stalinism and deportations.
WW2 was a particularly dark time. The nazis invaded. A local Jewish family were murdered. Young men were conscripted and sent to battles all over Europe. My ancestors were displaced, leaving the village completely abandoned. The Soviets captured my Great Grandparents and sent them to a forced labour camp in Tajikistan, which they didn't escape from until the 1960s.
Knowing the dark history of the region, I didn’t think I’d enjoy my time in the village. The colourful buildings, beautiful landscape and welcoming people took me by surprise. On reflection, I realised that I was projecting my Black Sea German heritage onto a new Ukrainian community; a community that has replaced my ancestors and their dark history. The people in the village had changed, and so had the energy of the place.
Since taking these photographs in 2019 Russia launched their full scale invasion of Ukraine bringing new meaning to the images. Once again this small village and its people face unimaginable adversity.
The project was funded by the British Council as part of an artist's residency at the Museum of Modern Art Odesa, Ukraine.
