Artur Vovchenko, Queer party “STEZKKA” in Kyiv, from series Thirst For Freedom, Ukraine, 2022
Description: Hello My name is Arthur Vovchenko and I am a photographer from Kyiv, Ukraine. For the last few years, I have been working in the club industry, which ceased to exist when the war started. Today, in wartime, our community is starting to make itself visible again. New parties awaken memories of a long forgotten phenomenon - life. All events in Kyiv now take place during the day, because of the curfew, which begins at eleven in the evening. The organizers transfer the funds raised to charity, and some even donate 100% of the profits. In October as a photographer I was invited to the queer party "Stezhka". With these shots, I would like to capture our thirst for freedom, our courage and resilience. We keep on dancing and kissing, despite all the unbearable pain in our souls, which is so relentless. We continue to shout to the world how strong, brave, free, and independent we are. And we will not be stopped. The idea of my project is to show the unbreakable spirit of the Ukrainian queer community, to capture the historical moment in which we are fighting for our freedom as a nation where everyone has the right to be free. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

My name is Artur Vovchenko. Since childhood I knew that I was an artist in the broadest sense of the word. I’ve been studying to become a book illustrator, where I mastered the basics of academic painting. By chance, while working on one of the assignments, a drawing of a rabbit with a wolf appeared on the paper. The first and decisive, from an idealess sketch, it became a manifesto on the canvases in my room, on the stones in the Carpathian mountains and tattoos on the skin of people dear to me. At the age of 20 my interest started shifting towards photography, also accidentally and naturally. Photography became a continuation of drawing for me, a new tool to express my ideas. Photography and drawing are one and the same for me. From commercial fashion shoots I quickly came to documentary and club photography. As a queer person I decided to focus my lens on what is native to me. I don't limit myself to anything, so I call myself a visual multidisciplinary artist. As a former student of Fine Arts, I have always been interested in art in its various manifestations and deviations, I love applying my academic base with personal approach in creation of content. In my work I like to capture the interaction of opposites. My style can be called childishly naive and cruel at the same time, intimate and honest, painterly and symbolic. I am an artist, a queer photographer, a rabbit, a wolf, both at the same time and none of them. From Kyiv, with love.
