Worthington Whittredge (American, 1820-1910)

Oil on canvas, 11 1/2 x 21 3/4 in. (29.2 x 55.2 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined.
Provenance: The Stebbins family collection, Massachusetts, purchased from Sotheby's New York, November 29, 1995, American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, Lot 110, as Farm by the Shore.
N.B. Whittredge was born and raised in rural Ohio where he had little artistic training. He moved to Cincinnati, and then traveled abroad to attend the Royal Academy in Dusseldorf. At this time it was still de rigueur for American artists to train at least briefly in Europe to be considered legitimate. By 1843 he focused almost exclusively on landscape painting. Whittredge became part of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, traveling on painting expeditions with John Frederick Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, and Sanford Robinson Gifford.
The view shown here is the Sakonnet Peninsula of Little Compton, Rhode Island. The village, though very rural in the 19th century, lies just across the bay from Newport, making it a popular painting destination.

Lining is adhered with glue or resin (possibly BEVA or similar?). There is some very fine craquelure throughout, and several old dots and dashes of retouch (see UV images).
Frame measures 18 1/2 x 29 x 3 1/4 in.
