William Rickarby Miller (New York, 1818-1893) The Mill in the Valley (Brittons Mill Staten Island)/ Composed Jany 23, 1891. Titled u.c. and inscribed "No ___New Series/(No___ 1000 Gems) 947," signed and dated l.l. "W.R. Miller/Jany 23 1891," inscribed l.r. "No___New Series/61 Bleeker St., N.Y.," and with another illegible inscription. Pen, ink, and graphite on paper, depicting figures sitting on the banks of a river near a mill, 12 x 9 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Minor toning, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: The estate of Arthur F. Goat, South Pomfret, Vermont.
Note: William Rickarby Miller's studio was located at 61 Bleeker St. from 1880 to 1891. According to the New York Historical Society's biography of him, he spent several years organizing a book on American landscapes titled
A Thousand Gems. The book was never published. The work retains a label from The Old Print Shop on the reverse.
