The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) as catalogue no. OPAA.618. A report from Mr. Baker accompanies the lot.
To summarize briefly from Mr. Baker's report, the portrait of Phoebe Hussey is one of ten known paintings of members of the Earle family of Philadelphia, possibly commissioned by George H. Earle Jr. This posthumous portrait may have been based on an earlier portrait or, more likely, a photograph of the subject. A prominent faculty member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1896 on, Chase opened a studio for portrait commissions in Philadelphia in 1905. He probably closed the studio in 1909 when he gave up teaching at PAFA. Mr. Baker noted that the inscription on the back of the canvas was written by Chase, an uncommon practice.
