Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.7 x 50.7 cm), framed (under glass).
Condition: Drying crack or similar to u.r. quadrant, craquelure, accretions, minor surface imperfections, and probable surface grime, not examined out of frame.
N.B. There is a presentation label on the stretcher with the typed message, "THE GLORY OF THE CLOUDS/PRESENTED TO MRS. CATHERINE Y. MERRILL/CHRISTMAS 1930" with the artist's signature "Wm. H. Holmes" in ink underneath. There is a second label that seems to be from an unknown exhibition that reads, "No. 62[crossed out] 63 "The Glory of the Clouds"/Lent by Mrs. Catherine Y. Merrill," as well as a third label that provided the owner's street address, without a city.
Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 20 1/2 x 24 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches.
Framd with a label from Venable's Fine Arts, Washington, DC. Stretcher with a fragmentary label from an artists' materials store in Washington, DC.
The stretcher is nailed into the frame, making it difficult to remove for examination. Shining a black light through the glass, however, there does not seem to be any obvious retouch.
