William Henry Holmes (American, 1846-1933)
The Glory of the Clouds
Signed "W.H. HOLMES" l.r., signed "Holmes" and with three sketches of cows in charcoal on the reverse, identified on two labels (see below) affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.7 x 50.7 cm), framed (under glass).
Condition: Drying crack or similar to u.r. quadrant, craquelure, accretions, minor surface imperfections, and probable surface grime, not examined out of frame.
N.B. There is a presentation label on the stretcher with the typed message, "THE GLORY OF THE CLOUDS/PRESENTED TO MRS. CATHERINE Y. MERRILL/CHRISTMAS 1930" with the artist's signature "Wm. H. Holmes" in ink underneath. There is a second label that seems to be from an unknown exhibition that reads, "No. 62[crossed out] 63 "The Glory of the Clouds"/Lent by Mrs. Catherine Y. Merrill," as well as a third label that provided the owner's street address, without a city.Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 20 1/2 x 24 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches.
Framd with a label from Venable's Fine Arts, Washington, DC. Stretcher with a fragmentary label from an artists' materials store in Washington, DC.
The stretcher is nailed into the frame, making it difficult to remove for examination. Shining a black light through the glass, however, there does not seem to be any obvious retouch.
