N.B. A Statement from the Estate of Werner Drewes accompanies the lot. We would like to thank the family of the artist for their assistance with cataloguing the lot and for providing the following information:
In 1966, Werner Drewes was just settling into the first phase of his retirement from teaching at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He and his second wife, Mary Lischer (“Maria”), an accomplished jeweler, had just moved to a farmette in Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania, where they had a view of the Delaware River. They transformed the barn on the property to house both their art and jewelry studio. We believe this is an abstract done at the end of their first winter with snows and reflections from their friends’ yard—The Shaw’s. They lived here another 6 years before moving to their final phase of retirement in Reston, Virginia.
