Watercolor Valentine, possibly the work of Edwin Plummer (Massachusetts, c. 1802-1880), the central oval showing a landscape with house and waterfall, edged with gold leaf, with seven smaller watercolors on teardrop-shaped pieces of paper meant to be affixed around the landscape, showing shells, birds, flowers, a "music" assemblage, and a "science" assemblage, (imperfections), oval 2 3/4 x 3 3/4, each surrounding watercolor dia. 2 3/4 in.
Note: This valentine (and the following lot, 455) was found with the Edwin Plummer portraits offered as Lot 453 in this auction. It is surmised that some of these drawings and watercolors are done by him, and the silhouette watercolor offered as part of lot 455 in particular bears great similarity to his work.
Estimate $1,000-1,500 partial loss to gilt edging of central oval, loss to most edges of surrounding watercolors (though some possibly weren't gilt-edged), some staining, evidence of old glue where the group was fixed together.
