Two Harrison Administration White House China Plates, designed by Carolyn Scott Harrison, made by Limoges, France, retailed by by M.W. Beveridge, Washington, D.C., c. 1892, the plate centered with an American eagle and shield with gilt star border, the rim with gilt corn border on a dark blue ground, maker's and retailer's marks on reverse, dia. 9 1/2, 7 1/4 in.
Note: Benjamin Harrison's first wife, Caroline, designed her own china pattern and it was she who started the White House china collection in 1890, by gathering pieces from previous administrations. She died of tuberculosis just two weeks before the 1892 presidential election in which her husband was defeated by Grover Cleveland.
