N.B. This drawing is number 62 from a series Wesselmann made using a hand-made stencil, each finished with variations in media and support. For some, like this example, the artist used only pencil, while he employed colored pencil on tracing paper, charcoal, and thinned Liquitex in other works from the series. Because Wesselmann made the original pencil lines with a stencil, he referred to this series as an "edition" and catalogued it with his prints, despite the fact that it was completely done by hand. He titled it as "Open Ended" because he intended to continue adding to the series with no limit or target number, though he finally concluded the series when he reached 200 works, after working on it for almost 20 years.
We would like to thank the Tom Wesselmann Estate for their kind assistance in cataloging this lot.
