Three-piece Suite of Modernist Sterling Silver Jewelry, Stella Popowski, c. 1950, a brooch and pair of screw-back earrings, inlaid with copper, brass, and enamel, each depicting a school of fish with "bubbles," each signed, brooch marked "925," and "Hecho en Mexico of Sterling," dia. earrings 1 1/8, brooch 2 1/4 in.
Donated by a generous Skinner supporter of AFH: "Making art develops skills crucial in many other areas of life. To conceive and execute a work of art requires not only creativity, but critical observation of your own work product, and self-motivation to learn and improve manual and analytic abilities. My friends from art school have become successful electricians, policy analysts, curators, museum registrars, studio managers, theatrical riggers and insurance adjusters in addition to practicing artists. Training in art-making tends to create focused, thoughtful and self-directed people."
Note: Stella (Estela) Popowski (1931-2008) was a Polish Jewish emigree who moved to Cuba in the 1940s to escape the Nazis in Europe, and worked in Taxco in the 1950s/60s designing jewelry for others (Antonio Pineda, Los Castillo) and later for herself. She moved to California where she painted, made decorative items, and was also a graphic designer. She passed away in Newport Beach, California, in 2008.Condition
