Lewis, Richmond, 4 June 1862, four-page autograph letter describing the positioning of the two armies, speaks of shelling and hearing heavy skirmishing, and concludes "I thought as I sit listening at the destruction of human lives of that lovely old home which I hope to see again," 9 x 5 1/2 in.; W.W. Brooks, Richmond, 8 June 1862, two-page autograph letter with original envelope and stamp, he speaks of the general illness in his company due to exposure to the rain, describes pushing the Union back and camping in the woods to wait in ambush, and concludes saying he read a few Union letters saying that capturing Richmond will lead to the end of the war, but mentions orders to burn Richmond if it has to be evacuated, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.; W.W. Brooks, Richmond, 18 June 1862, four-page letter with original envelope and stamp, similar content to the previous but with more vivid detail, he describes lying in the woods as bullets fly overhead, the horrible groans of the wounded, watching men retreat with blood running down their faces, and having to charge soldiers behind entrenchments, 8 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.
