Unsigned, inscribed "JAMES HILHOUSE./1755" and "MRS. JAMES HILHOUSE/NEE MARTIN/1755," respectively, identified on presentation plaques and on an auction label (see below) affixed to the stretcher of Mr. Hilhouse's portrait.
Oil on canvas, 50 x 40 in. (127.0 x 101.6 cm), framed.
Condition: Both lined, retouch, fine craquelure, surface grime.

Mr. Hilhouse holds an envelope inscribed "To Mrs. Hilhouse at Bristol" in his left hand. Mrs. Hilhouse's portrait has a handwritten partial label on the stretcher ascribing the work to Hudson and makes mention of Mr. Hilhouse's companion portrait where he holds the envelope addressed to his wife.
