N.B. A photograph that shows some of these stained glass panels in situ in an interior of a New York city house accompanies this lot. The house remain unidentified. These panels, as well as Lots (145, 365, 366, 389, 444, and 475) were purchased from this house by the previous owner of the works. Doig-Bernadini Studios was located at 230 West 13th Street, New York. The company was founded as Bernadini Studios in 1850, specializing in designing and constructing Catholic church interiors. In 1943, William Anthony Claude Randolph Doig renamed the business Doig-Bernadini. Under this name the company supplied mostly Catholic, and some Protestant and Jewish houses of worship, with specially designed furniture and furnishings, including marble statuary and stained glass, often imported from European suppliers and makers. Some of the stained glass was designed in the New York Studios, while it was made in Holland and shipped to the United States. William Doig's son Barry carried on the family business until closing it in 1970; at which time it was known as the oldest company in the United States to design and supply churches with interior elements. It is possible that these panels of secular subject matter were for a private commission, either the house interior shown in the photograph or a prior installation.
